Daily Dilemma (“Daily Dilemma,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, share, and otherwise handle information when you use the Daily Dilemma mobile application and related services (collectively, the “App”).
The App includes daily philosophical dilemmas, a community forum, AI-assisted philosopher dialogue, bookmarks, a local journal, and related learning content. By using the App, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
We collect information in the ways described below. The amount of information collected depends on how you use the App. Much of the App can be used without creating a permanent account.
1.1 Information you provide
- Dilemma votes: the answer or vote (A or B) you submit for a daily dilemma.
- Forum content: dilemmas, comments, replies, votes, likes/dislikes, and avatar selections you choose when posting or commenting.
- User feedback: messages you submit through the in-app feedback feature, including content-error reports on dilemmas.
- Forum reports: reports you submit about content, including the reason selected and any optional note.
- Bookmarks: items you save (for example dilemmas, quotes, concepts, books, or videos), synced to your guest Auth identity when connected features are used.
1.2 Information collected automatically
- Auth identity: the App uses Supabase Auth. Guests receive a server-issued anonymous Auth session so connected features can enforce access controls. A random device identifier may still be stored locally and sent as a technical header for migration and abuse-resistance; it is not used as the sole authorization secret.
- Usage and interaction data: such as forum votes and reactions, bookmark actions, language preference, reminder settings, AI usage counts, IP-derived rate-limit keys used to prevent abuse, and similar technical records needed to operate the App.
- Local app data: information stored on your device, including dilemma history, AI chat threads, journal notes, forum drafts, and interface preferences.
1.3 AI dialogue and forum AI features
When you use philosopher dialogue, the App can send your message, recent conversation, a short summary of that conversation, and, if your message is about today’s dilemma, the dilemma text. Forum philosopher openings and replies can send the forum post and your comment.
That chat text is sent to DeepSeek to generate the reply or summary. On a later philosopher reply that needs a deeper search, the same text may also be sent to Alibaba DashScope (Qwen) so the App can find related passages. The first message in a dialogue, and shorter replies, are matched on our servers without sending your text to DashScope. Published philosopher passages may be embedded ahead of time for that search. Those offline embeddings do not include your messages.
Before your first philosopher dialogue, the App names DeepSeek and Alibaba DashScope (Qwen) on the philosopher screen. Tapping Start conversation is your agreement. If you choose Not now, that choice is stored on your device and the App does not call the AI service, including any preparation request. You can withdraw consent in the menu under Privacy & Data. After you withdraw, dialogue asks again, and no further chat text is sent until you start a conversation.
We use this information to provide AI-generated replies, summaries, and forum enrichment. We do not intentionally store complete AI chat histories on our servers as a permanent user log; chat threads are primarily stored on your device. Our servers may temporarily process request content to generate a response and may retain limited usage metadata (such as daily request counts per Auth identity) and short-lived rate-limit records.
1.4 Information we do not intentionally collect
We do not require your real name, postal address, phone number, or payment details to use the core App. Please do not include unnecessary personal or sensitive identifying information in forum posts, comments, feedback, or AI chats.
2. How We Use Information
We use information for the following purposes:
- to provide and operate the App and its features;
- to count votes and display aggregated dilemma results;
- to host, display, moderate, and manage forum content and interactions;
- to bind connected writes (votes, forum posts, bookmarks, AI quota) to a guest Auth identity;
- to provide AI-assisted dialogue, summaries, and forum philosopher responses;
- to enforce usage limits, prevent abuse, and maintain security;
- to respond to reports, feedback, and support enquiries;
- to comply with legal obligations and protect our rights; and
- to maintain, improve, and develop the App.
We do not use your information for unrelated advertising or behavioural profiling for marketing purposes.
3. Aggregated and Public Information
Dilemma voting results may be shown in aggregated form and are not intended to identify individual users.
Forum posts and comments you submit may be visible to other users according to the App’s design. An avatar you choose may be shown with your forum content.
4. Legal Basis and Hong Kong Privacy
Where the App collects or processes personal data in Hong Kong, we intend to handle such personal data in accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) and other applicable legal requirements.
We generally process personal data for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy on the basis that processing is necessary to provide the App, with your consent where required, or otherwise as permitted by applicable law.
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information.
We may share information with service providers that help us operate the App, such as:
- hosting, database, authentication, and backend infrastructure providers (including Supabase, currently in the Sydney region);
- artificial intelligence providers that receive chat text after you agree: DeepSeek (replies and summaries) and Alibaba DashScope / Qwen (a search embedding of a later, longer dialogue message, when that search runs).
These providers may process information only as necessary to provide services to us, subject to contractual and legal protections.
Operators with administrative access to the Supabase project may review feedback, forum reports, and operational logs to moderate content and keep the service secure.
We may also disclose information where required by law, to respond to lawful requests by authorities, to protect the rights, safety, and security of Daily Dilemma, our users, or others, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or similar transaction.
6. International and Cross-Border Processing
Our service providers may store or process information in Hong Kong or in other countries or regions (including Australia for the primary Supabase project region, and other regions used by AI providers). Where personal data is transferred outside Hong Kong, we aim to take reasonable steps required by applicable law to protect that information.
7. Data Retention
We retain information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law.
- Dilemma votes and aggregated results: retained as needed to operate voting features; account linkage is removed when you delete your account.
- Forum content and interactions: retained while the content remains available in the App or until deleted; on account deletion, your posts/comments are anonymised (display name shown as “Deleted user”) rather than removed from the public feed.
- Account and profile information / bookmarks: retained while your account remains active; deleted when you delete your account.
- Reports and feedback: retained as needed to review and address them (operational default up to 24 months); identity fields are unlinked on account deletion.
- AI usage metadata: retained about 40 days for quota enforcement.
- IP-derived rate-limit records: retained about 7 days.
- Local device data: retained on your device until you clear it, uninstall the App, or reset relevant App data.
8. Your Choices and Rights
Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete certain personal data, or to object to or restrict certain processing.
You can:
- use the App without creating a permanent signed-in account;
- start a conversation, or choose Not now, before philosopher dialogue sends chat text to DeepSeek and Alibaba DashScope (Qwen), and withdraw that consent under Privacy & Data in the menu. After you withdraw, dialogue asks again and no chat text is sent until you start a conversation. The choice stays on your device;
- clear AI chat history, dilemma history, and journal notes within the App;
- reset local app data within the App;
- delete forum content you posted where the App provides deletion tools;
- delete guest data in the App: open the menu (⋮), choose Privacy & Data, then Delete my account, and confirm twice. Dilemma votes and feedback are unlinked from you, bookmarks and forum reactions are deleted, and forum posts and comments are anonymised (shown as “Deleted user”) rather than removed from the feed. Local data on the device is cleared and a new guest session starts;
- request deletion of leftover named-account data on the web at https://daily-dilemma.pages.dev/delete-account without reinstalling the App; and
- contact us using the details below regarding privacy enquiries.
We may need to retain certain information where required by law or for legitimate operational purposes.
9. Children’s Privacy
The App is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 in violation of applicable law.
If you believe a child has provided personal information to us in a way that violates applicable law, please contact us so we can review and address the issue.
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect information against unauthorised access, loss, misuse, or alteration, including server-side access controls (row-level security and authenticated RPCs). Hiding controls in the App alone is not treated as security. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Third-Party Links and Services
The App may contain links to third-party websites, content, or services that we do not control (for example search links from learning features). This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties. Your use of third-party services is subject to their own terms and privacy policies.
12. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we may provide notice within the App or by other appropriate means. The “Last updated” date at the top of this Privacy Policy indicates when it was most recently revised.
Your continued use of the App after an updated Privacy Policy becomes effective means the revised policy applies to your use of the App, to the extent permitted by law.
